A chiropractor is a doctor that helps your body maximize its own self-healing capability. We get your body back in balance so it can heal naturally without the use of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic care is a system for evaluating and correcting misalignments in your spine that cause nerve interference that cause musculoskeletal disorders (back pain, headaches, etc.) and poor health.
Yes. We need the same requirements to get into chiropractic school as a medical doctor needs to get into medical school. We go to chiropractic school for 3 ½ years and do our internship during this time. Chiropractic students get anatomy, physiology, pathology, and all the other required classes that other health care providers get in their respective schools. In addition, we also have many hours of Chiropractic curriculum. During academia, we have to take 4 parts of rigorous National Board exams. Once we have graduated and passes all 4 Board exams we apply for State Licensure.
Chiropractic was discovered in 1895 by a man named D.D. Palmer. The first chiropractic patient, Harvey Lillard did not have neck or back pain. He was deaf. After an the first adjustment, Harvey who lost his hearing 18 years earlier when he turned his neck the wrong way, had it completely restored. People from all over came to see D.D. to get their hearing fixed. But, there are many reasons why people go deaf so not everyone could hear again, but every person who got adjusted noticed a difference in all or nearly all of their health concerns. A new health care movement was born.
Chiropractic care doesn’t cost, it saves. I am reminded of the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” One of the main reasons the U.S. is ranked so poorly in the world for health is that we follow a reactionary health model. In other words, we do not do anything for our health until we have lost it. Unfortunately, once it is gone, it is exceedingly difficult and costly to get it back especially since the insurance companies don’t always provide the coverage you may need. In my office, I make sure it is affordable to those who truly want my care. Not only do we help you get as much of your health back as possible, we help you stay that way.
You should look for a chiropractor who does a consultation, examination and takes x-rays. They should also provide you with a report of findings, usually the next day. During that appointment the chiropractor should show you where your problem is, how they can help, how long it will take and how much it will cost. The reason you should choose my office is that I help you through the process of correcting the misalignments in your spine. How will you know this? Because I will take follow up x-rays and show you the differences. Only 10% of the chiropractors practice this way. I correct the problem and show you how we can maintain it so you are still not suffering from the same problems or worse 10, 20, 30 years down the road.
Yes, I have had many pregnant moms under my care. During pregnancy, women are told to try to stay away from any medications because it could be bad for the fetus. Since chiropractic is drug free, it is the best option. It is during this time that moms rely on their innate healing ability to stay healthy and recover from illnesses. A hormone called oxytocin is secreted which loosens the ligaments and allows the pelvis to expand to accommodate the baby as it grown and prepares it for delivery. When the ligaments are loose, it does not take a lot of force to cause subluxations which can lead to pain or lowered health. My pregnant patients have told me that when they were under chiropractic care they felt better and had an easier delivery than when the were pregnant and did not have chiropractic care.
I love this question. We do not treat anything. We help the body get back into balance and in many cases the body can heal itself. Sometimes there is permanent damage and that may limit the amount of results you may get. The goal of the chiropractor is not necessarily to get you out of pain, but to restore you to as high a level of health as possible. That being said, I have had patients experience great results with headaches, migraines, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica and many other conditions. The big bonus is patients have also benefitted from chiropractic to help with digestion, energy levels, mood, aches, pains, blood pressure, immune system and many others.
In most cases the adjustments feel great, immediately. On rare occasions, when a patient already has a high level of pain and they are in the acute stage, there may be some discomfort with the adjustments. As the symptoms subside, the adjustments get more comfortable. Throughout the day you can hear lots of ooh’s and ahs from people getting relief. Adjustments feel really good.
No. We do the adjustments in an open room. With the state of health in the U.S., it is critical that people know as much as possible so they may take control of theirs. We are constantly educating our patients on things they can do in their every day lives to help themselves and their families.
Chiropractic has been proven to be very safe. In fact, we have the lowest rise of adverse side effects of all health care providers. It is important to go to a chiropractor that will do a consultation, examination and take x-rays to ensure that treatment is right for you. It will also give the doctor information they need to provide the best care options for optimal results.
No. While it may appear that everybody is getting the same thing, each patient is adjusted for their unique subluxation patterns. Some patients get adjusted by hand and some get adjusted by instruments that don’t cause the “popping or cracking” sounds. It all depends on your body and your preference.
Children respond incredibly well to chiropractic care. Of course, their adjustments can be much different than an adult’s adjustment due to their smaller size. In my previous practice half my patients were children. As the grow, it is vital that they get regular adjustments, so they don’t grow up and have the same problems their parents do. Just like going to the dentist, chiropractic care should begin in early childhood. Often, the first problems occur in a child’s neck during the birth process. They can get things like ear infections and colic as a result. About 50% of kids fall from a height during their first year of life. As they begin to walk, kids fall an average of 1500 times during this process. If you have ever watched a toddler fall closely you can see the jarring that occurs to their spine and neck. All these little traumas add up to their little spines and can cause problems that only a chiropractor can find and correct.
No, we would not have the success helping people if we were cracking bones. The noise you hear is the gasses and fluids leaving the joint capsule when we give an adjustment. It is like “popping” your knuckles. At the end of the bones we have a smooth gliding surface called cartilage. Think of the white at the end of a chicken leg bone. This cartilage gets nourishment from fluids and gasses that are in capsules which surround the joint. When the capsule is opened during the adjustment, the fluids and gasses escape causing the noise. When I have a patient that does not want to hear the noise, I utilize different techniques in my office so there are no audibles.
